FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
I want to donate a backpack. Where do I drop it off?

503-780-2422
Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes. Donations to Global Backpack Project are tax deductible as allowed by U.S. law.
Global Backpack Project is fiscally sponsored by CICAN, Collaborative for International Children's Art and Non-profits, a registered 501(c)(3) organization.
Does my donation go directly to children in need?
Yes. Global Backpack Project is 100 percent fueled by volunteer professionals, so our overhead costs are very low. Donated backpacks are delivered to the children in our current regions of focus. Monetary donations are used to buy backpacks and supplies. Indigo Traders provides financial support to cover all administrative and operational expenses of Global Backpack Project so your donation will go directly to a child in need.
Does my donation really make a difference in the lives of children?
Yes. We believe that helping children feel prepared for school goes a long way toward boosting their self-esteem and encouraging them to stay in school. Research shows that education is the best way to escape the cycle of poverty and provide a chance for a future with opportunities and choices. For more information, please read the Soroptimist International of the Americas White Paper.
How do you decide where to buy backpacks and supplies? Do you purchase in the countries you serve, or buy in the U.S. and ship?
We research the options and purchase supplies where it makes the most economic sense. In some countries, supplies are simply not available. If we can avoid shipping costs and purchase packs and supplies locally while supporting local economies, we do so; but sometimes it’s more feasible to buy supplies in the U.S.
What items should I include in the backpack?
Basic school supplies to include in the backpack are pencils, pencil sharpeners, pens, mechanical pencils with lead refills, crayons, colored pencils, erasers, calculators, paper, tooth brushes, toothpaste and band-aids. On occasion, we receive donated backpacks with special little gifts like harmonicas, yo-yo's or combs which are a pleasant surprise to the children receiving the backpacks.
I’d like to volunteer. How can I get involved?
There are many ways to get involved such as organizing a backpack drive or fundraiser. Click here to learn more about getting involved or contact us.
How do you identify groups of children to help?
We focus on helping children who live in underserved areas where we travel for our business so that we don’t have to spend a dime on shipping costs. As GBP grows, we hope to expand our scope by securing corporate sponsorships and donations for shipping costs.
